If you’ve purchased a lip gloss from Shiro before, either their This Is Halloween colour, or any of the glosses from this previous xmas, it uses the same formula, however now this time you get to choose the opacity.

About a month ago, Shiro released their new fantastic, custom option of creating a lipgloss out of any of their lip safe eyeshadows and blushes. Can you imagine the frenzy that set a lot of fans and bloggers in? I was pretty damn excited, because I ready to get ALL THE ORANGE, until I realised Shiro actually has a lot of other colours which tickle my fancy.

If you’ve purchased a lip gloss from Shiro before, either their This Is Halloween colour, or any of the glosses from this previous xmas, it uses the same formula, however now this time you get to choose the opacity. I remember reading some reviews who felt the xmas glosses were too sheer, but really loved the formula. Now you can have you gloss, and eat it too…if you like, but I don’t really recommend that.

So let’s get right in to this thing then!

Product

What I ordered:

Alkahestry (sheer)

Eye Contact (moderate)

Flamethrower (moderate)

Masterball (moderate)

Mushroom (moderate)

Like I said before, the base these glosses use is identical to previous glosses Shiro has released. The colour you want is entirely up to you! Just make sure it is lip safe, every listing on the website states clearly whether the products are lip safe or not, so do pay close attention. It says it smells lightly of pure rich chocolate, but to be honest it doesn’t really smell all that scented to me, so this should appease those who prefer little or no fragrance with the glosses. There is also no taste as well. The gloss itself is ultra smooth, super shiny, not sticky at all and is highly moisturing. It’s a lovely formula The colours I have, only one really contains a high level of sparkles/shimmer, Alkahestry, but I didn’t feel any gritty feeling on my lips. I also find that they aren’t very heavy at all on the lips. Are they long lasting? Well they do good up until you eat and drink, which is pretty much the life cycle of lip glosses. I have not noticed any staining with the colours I have purchased, but cannot comment on any other colours. Your custom lip gloss has the option of whatever opacity level you choose. The ranges are sheer, moderate and opaque (with an extra 50c charge for the opaque option.). I asked Caitlin about the difference between sheer and moderate, and if any of her existing products fell into that range. I was responded with that This Is Halloween is on the moderate-opaque, and Red Ryder (from the xmas collection, I asked because that’s the only gloss in the xmas collection I own) is sheer to moderate, but more on the sheer end. This description I found very helpful, as I did have the glosses from previous collection to refer to. I hope this bit of information is helpful to those who also have previous glosses and weren’t sure on their opacity levels.

I’ve definitely found these glosses to be able to be layered, to intense their opacity. I have swatches showing how their intensity changes, when layered with only an extra coat or two.

I also layered Masterball over Shiro’s Over 900 intertube. I found masterball to be more blue tone purple, then red tone purple as per the website photo. Purple can be a real PITA to photograph correctly. I didn’t have that eyeshadow as a sample, and I went searching for swatches, and I thought I had an average colour in mind sorted. I wish I had ordered it as sheer, because as moderate it’s too dark for my liking However it does magic with pink lipsticks Turns them into such a pretty mauve colour! In fact the swatch I did reminds me so much of Mauve Outta Here from Wet’n'Wild So as a layering gloss, I like Masterball very much. To wear on it’s own, not so much

Flamethrower can be a tad strong on the yellow side, but it’s also great in layering over oranges and corals. This is another colour I wish I had as sheer, but I’ll make this work for sure I might even try mixing another of my lip safe orange pigments to adjust the colour.

Eye Contact is one of those MLBB colours for me. It’s pretty effortless, and is incredibly pretty. I can confidently wear this one alone.

Alkahestry is everything I wanted Wylful Wyvern from GCC to be. It’s more purple than WW and it had some pretty intense blue shimmers in it. I chose to get this colour in sheer, because it’s not a colour I can wear alone in a higher opacity. At sheer it is so lovely, and really adds some dimension to your lips. Layering? YOU BET BOYS AND GIRL. This would be so so so awesome over anything, to give it a little boost. I want to play with this one some more.

Mushroom reminds me a lot of Type A from Fyrinnae. Apparently Type A is being discontinued, so if you really dig the colour, Mushroom is a pretty bad ass dupe for it. I’ll try and get a side by side comparison for the two.

Packaging

When I purchased my glosses they came in jars with screw lids. Highly messy little buggars However, Shiro has taken on the overwhelming feedback and has switched the packaging option to 10mL squeeze tube. I repotted my glosses into tubes, with doe foot applicators.

Price

I paid $7 for the glosses (potted) and it looks the price has increased by 50c to $7.50 for the new packaging, squeeze tubes. I find the price to still be reasonable, especially as it’s a custom product. I would love to see a discount deal for the glosses, like Shiro offers with the intertubes.

Swatches

All were swatched over bare lips, and photographed in natural sunlight (next to a window). Any that I have layered over a colour, they are noted. Also I have swatched the same colour twice, with the more sheer application and then with a heavier application.

My bare lips for reference

For comparison, the swatch of Type A from Fyrinnae, if you wanted to compare. I would say that Mushroom has a tad more orange, whilst Type A is more brown, but to me they’re quite close!

Lasting Impressions

I’ve already got more glosses on the way! I’m very happy with the glosses I have, love the formula and I think that I’ll definitely come back to choose more custom options with every release Shiro puts out for their eyeshadows. The only complaint I had about these glosses was the packaging, but that already been addressed and altered before I had a chance to say anything I would love to see Shiro release some matte colours in their collection sometime, because I bet that would attract even more fans. I think having the option of matte/low sheen shadows would help with people who are afraid of ‘the frosty lip’ that some shimmers and metallics can give, and I totally agree, I am one of those frostryphobic people. A+, 10/10, would buy again

This group of swatches were swatched over Pixie Epoxy and photographed under a day light bulb in my lightbox.

My absolute favourites of this group are Penelope and Bittersweet. You all know by now that I have a serious issue with orange, however let’s all just take a moment and look at Penelope. Did you see it? Look again, I’ll give you some time. Crazy beautiful, amirite? I don’t wear pinks/mauves often, but that is a seriously stunning shade. It would look so good with Bittersweet on the outer v!

Day 20: Get real. Share something you’re struggling with right now.

This was originally going to be about me struggling to keep motivated with exercise, but now I’m actually struggling to want to finish this post because OF THE RISE OF THE CRAPTOP FROM IT’S ANCIENT SLUMBER -_- For real though, I struggle to stay motivated to do exercise, which is stupid. On my dad’s side of the family heart disease is a common factor (my dad had a stroke when he was 49 and is on meds to control his high blood pressure, his mother died of complications related to a stroke she had in her 70s, and his dad also had heart problems). I need to keep this in check, because if there’s one thing I’ve learned is that genetics doesn’t give a fuck how nice you are, or how many puppies you’ve given cuddles to. Genetics does what it does, it makes code and then makes that code happen. So I have an increased risk of heart disease, so I need to begin working on preventing this happening to me.

Day 21: A list of links to your favorite posts in your archives

My favourite necklace.

PUG NECKLACE

I love the intro on this post

The first and last photo I ever posted when I had green dip dyed hair. PLUS bonus Daria shirt

Day 22: Rant about something.

Smoking – I DON’T GET IT. It’s 2013, we all KNOW that smoking is one of the worst things you can do to yourself, so if you’re not actively trying to quit, then I don’t understand why you’re doing it. I cannot tolerate a smoker who then goes on to complain “oh man I’ve had this cough for ages….”

How can you waste so much money on poison? I hate people who will spend money on cigarettes but then say they don’t have enough to buy food. GTFO.
No, I guess I don’t know how difficult it is to quit, however I’m guessing it’s more difficult to be told you have lung cancer. I sound very rude right now, and I guess I am being rude. I’m very terrified of death, and sometimes I wonder why others don’t want to do their best to live as many years as possible, if they can. Like I said above, I’ve got risk factors that I need to control. However that is something somewhat out of control. You CAN control smoking, so don’t do it.

Day 23: Things you’ve learned that school won’t teach you.

There will always be people who want to see you fail.

There will always be people who will dislike you for no apparent reason. You may not even know them, but it happens.

There will always be people who thrive on arguments and want to make themselves look clever by putting others down.

However there will always be people who you can depend on, and they make all the shitty people you’ve encountered over time look like that, shitty people.

High school test scores do not define you, as a person. If you want something bad enough, you’ll find ways of getting it. My UAI was not good, I wasn’t eligible for university entrance to anywhere, but now I’m in a university that is in the top 8 universities in the country. Like I said, you want something bad enough, you make like Chuck Norris and kick any ass that’s in your way.

Working out how to calculate ‘percentage off’ in a shop. Yep. I just didn’t understand how to do that in school. Now, thanks to D I can actually do it in the shop. That sounds incredibly pathetic, but I’ve never once said my mental arithmetic was any good, have I

Day 24: Your top 3 worst traits

I don’t really want to get into it, who really wants to talk about their bad traits

Laziness

Undecidness

Quick to see the negative side of every situation/person.

So I actually managed to get through this in 20 minutes. Pretty pleased with that xD However I don’t wish to do that ever again. I will acquaint myself with the save draft button O.O

I can’t remember how old I was or what grade I was in school, maybe kindergarten or year 1? The infants section of the school (infants is what we in Australia call grades Kingergarten, year 1 and year 2 collectively) was doing The Wizard Of Oz for the school play. That school I attended back then was a very tiny school, which had 60 students maximum. I remember there were a few days where the teachers and the students in K/1/2 were sitting in a circle and they were talking about the play and what roles were available. I remember that everytime the teachers brought up the role of Dorothy there was this one girl who’d get a smug look on her face and give herself the thumbsup that it was going to be her. Ugghh I wanted to stick my tongue out at her because it was so annoying when she did that. I remember at the time feeling a little bummed because I had wanted the part of Dorothy. There weren’t many girls in section K/1/2 so this girl in particular would make sure to go around at lunchtime announcing to all the girls that the part of Dorothy was hers and that she was perfect for the part. I felt so incredibly pissed off at how confident she was and how nobody else had a chance because she was little miss perfect.

Then the teachers announced who was getting what roles.

.

.

.

.

She didn’t get the part of Dorothy.

.

.

.

.

I did.

She was convinced that because she didn’t get the part of Dorothy that she was going to get the part of Glinda and that was ‘a much prettier dress, and I get to wear a tiara too!”. Her face when she found out she was going to be the wicked witch of the west:

It all worked out for the best though, because she played a really good wicked witch. I guess the teachers just figured out it would be easy for her to channel her bitchiness and smug personality into the part. I just remember being really happy that I got the part and my friends all secretly laughed at that girl because of how over the top confident she was that she’d get the part and then relegated to her absolute bottom choice xD

All I know is that I got to be the lead role for the first and last time, and it was for one of the best stories ever. So left my theatre career on a high note and faded away into the sunset to pursue a life of tea and science.

Day 16: Something difficult about your “lot in life” and how you’re working to overcome it

Sharing my emotions with others and trusting others.

My family life growing up was turbulent, violent and downright weird. I’m not going into specifics. What I will say is that I was raised to be suspicious, trust nobody ever, never to show any emotion to anybody because that is a bad thing and that you look after yourself in this world because you don’t rely on others for anything. I didn’t realise I was emotionally ‘numb’ until I was near the end of highschool, and my circle of friends were talking about how they got on so well with their siblings, how they had all these great memories and moments, how they trusted everyone in their family. I just put it down to that they were families that had the luxury of being able to take family holidays and do weekend trips together, so they could make better memories. I have some good memories with my siblings, but they usually involve playing board games, pranks on each other, watching tv or other games we played together. Better than bad memories!
I think maybe the last time I hugged my mum I was about 11, and that might be pushing. I’d never hugged any of my siblings, and it felt wrong to do so. About 6 years ago, my youngest sister gave me a hug in public, and I just stood there like a fucking stone statue because I just did not know wtf was happening and how to respond to such a situation. All I could say was “That was awkward…why did you do that?”. I was a douchebag. My sister was trying to be a sister and I rejected it….because I didn’t understand that people actually were emotional with one another, particularly with family. I feel like a pretentious fucking idiot even talking like this. I was 18 and I felt disgusted at the concept of a hug from a family member. Right about the time I first started going out with D, I overheard a phone call he made to his mum and sister. He said “I love you mum, love you sister” and that again felt wrong to me. I could never say those words (and part of me thinks I can never say them because I don’t think I actually mean it…story for another time maybe) and it pissed me off that he was talking so casually about something that shouldn’t be shared….at least that’s how I thought it was meant to be.

To cut a long story short, over the span of a year I beagn to realise that what I was doing with my emotions was bullshit, and that carrying around all that crappy baggage (that really should’ve been put in the garbage years ago) was wrong. That it was time to let go, and begin a new period of beginning to try to trust people around me, and to be comfortable to share my feelings and emotions with them.

It was awkward at first, because I had such an outpouring of crap. I had so much bottled up. I am thankful that I had some great friends at the time who supported me and helped me work some things out.

I’m now at the point where it no longer feels wrong to give friends hugs. I can actually cry during movies and songs! I’ve come from a point where I saw emotional crisis points for people and all I thought was “grow up” and now I can appreciate varying degrees of our emotional spectrum. I feel that’s been a very big step in my growth as a young adult. I still don’t readily trust people, and most of the time my default position is to be suspicious and believe that anything I share will be used against me (remember that post I made a few weeks ago about how I can’t really accept compliments? Well that stems from this in a way.), but I feel that I’m getting better at being able to make deeper, more personal connections with chosen people in my life.

If this post made you feel awkward in anyway, here’s a pug in a tea cup

Day 17: A favorite photo of yourself and why

I don’t have access to my childhood photos, and I never took any photos of myself during highschool. This was before digital cameras were affordable and camera phones were super expensive as well. So the only camera I had were the analogue ones, with rolls of film

This is a photo I really like of myself. I was 21 here, and this was when I digging the short hair phase. This is the photo I keep referring back to when I get the itch to cut my hair short again. Currently my hair is down to my waist. Sometimes I just feel like maybe I should just cut it, but then I always come up with a few reasons not to. My latest reason not to is that I brought a waving wand last year, and that it would be wasted on short hair.

I think this is my natural hair colour here, but then again it might be old faded colour in there as well. I know I went through many periods where I would use those “12 washes and they’re gone” hair colours, and this may have been on the end of that, because the right (my left) looks a little more orange. Anyway, this photo always makes me feel happy when I look at it

I actually took these photos last Thursday. I’m not really favoured on capturing photos during my day, because I just have too much in the way and it’s not really practicaly to whip out my camera whilst I’m in the middle of an experiment, or when I’m on the train. Privacy issues + inappropriate + the fact that student life can be boring to those already past their student days. So do forgive me for there not being many photos to look at here Basically you’re getting my train routine, because I can’t really be taking photos of inside the lab for blogging etc. I can take photos for my report yes, but I can really do much else without arousing suspicious questions xD

Leaving the station on my way to uni at 6:35am. Wishing I was still in bed, but at least the sky gave me a pretty gradient to look at upon leaving

Settling in for the long journey to uni. 2.5 hour trip

Lab coat down as my little travel blanket to keep me warm in the mornings haha. Also, say hello to MODERN CARPETED WALLS AND FLOORS TO MAKE YOUR TRAIN JOURNEY FEEL MORE LIKE HOME ca 1970s. Carpet on a train, I don’t think designers clearly thought the rammification of using carpeting on a public service. Especially disgusting members of the public.

My typical student day bag packed. Lab manual, netbook, pencil case, make up bag, empty and full boxes of tic tacs, various train tickets scattered around, general junk and clutter. Just the way I like it.

Whilst I’m unpacking my bag, I can enjoy the scenery, of all the beauty that nature provides on this lovely autumn morning commute.

Now that I’ve stopped to smell the roses, I can settle in to forgetting that I am even awake at this hour and try to make the long haul a little more bearable. Out comes the netbook and the mp3 player, depending on my mood. That day I was watching Rooftop Prince (a Korean drama), and I typically watch my asian dramas on the train. Otherwise if I watch them at home I spend too many hours doing so and I never get anything done xD

Central Station. Now I just need to hop on a bus and I’m at uni I actually think Sydney Central Station is kind of nice, when there aren’t crazy people harassing you for money, or groups of annoying school kids. It’s very easy to just walk through it and not realise it’s been there for over 100 years, and that there are a lot of lovely architectural points to marvel at. I really like the clock tower that’s out the front, but I really dig the big clock in the main walkway too. I guess I really like clocks? Too bad I have issues about being timely…..

Now off to class…..

On the way home! My usual afternoon snack of a flavoured iced green tea with rainbow jelly (it’s vegan jelly, they use agar. It’s nice to have jelly again ) and some sort of food. Today was cashews, which I was pretty much extorted for. $4.70 for this 50g of nuts. Lesson: don’t buy snacks from the newsagents at the station, 5 minutes before the train leaves because in your rush you are going to get ripped off.

Leaving, to get back home and pretend that I never left the house today. Cityrail, doing their best to make Sydney look as bleak

I had read that using metal files and emery boards where not the best tools for your nails as they tended to make nails weaker and more prone to splitting and breaking off. Ever since I switched to using glass files for my nails, they did improve, and I haven’t had them split on me since. However…not all glass nail files are made equal, and some are downright rubbish. This is probably not news for many people, but I had been a nail biter for pretty much 90% of my life up until last year, so nail files and the discussion of such things weren’t exactly on my radar, infact they weren’t at all. My teeth were my nail file -_-’

Basically I had tried 3 glass nail files, one from Revlon, one from Cutex and another from Ebay (a no name one). Basically what I’ve learned over the course of these files is that some files have the file texture sprayed/adhered onto a smooth glass base, and that it will wear off over time. Think of it like emery boards. They don’t last forever, and we all know that after a few uses they can’t be saved, so in the bin they go. Basically that’s what some glass files are like as well. I actually did not know that, and I thought glass files were something that would last much, much longer. Some of them do actually last for a long time, years in fact. I had thought that maybe there were varying levels of quality with the glass files, some having a finer texture and would be more gentle on the nails, and that the cheaper versions would be more rough. Never actually thought that there might have been a coating that would wear away.

lololol the Revlon one was PATHETIC. This is the one I purchased from Priceline and it was around $12AUD.

When I first purchased and used it, I thought it was great. It was filing down my nails quickly and smoothly and everything felt great. Until the next time I wanted to use it. It was dull, had lost its ‘edge’, and looked like the file was actually wearing down. I thought that perhaps the file just needed to be cleaned, so I took an old toothbrush and warm soapy water and gave it a clean. Left it dry overnight. Next day, the result was the same. I couldn’t file my nails, and I probably wouldv’e achieved the same result if I was running my nails over my laminate benchtop in the kitchen. Infact, I know I could’ve filed them down a lot quicker if I had run my nails along the concrete driveway outside. There are so many countless negative reviews on this particular nail file, which I wish I had seen before I purchased this file, I laugh at even calling this a file. Scored a 1/5 on Makeup Alley , someone scratched the actual ‘file’ exposing smooth glass underneath This is a file that has had it’s texture sprayed on, and you can actually scratch that texture away with glass, or with your actual nails over a period of time :/ I wish I still had the one that I purchased to show you the state it was in, but I threw it away months ago, before I had even thought about talking about it. I was pretty shocked that Revlon would even sell a nail file of such low quality. I’m no expert when it comes to Revlon, but I thought I knew enough to expect something that would at least last for more than 1 use.

The ebay glass file. Not bad for 99cents, you get what you pay for. It noticed it lost its edge quickly, but it took a few weeks of use for that to occur. Not after 1 use. You know, it’s pretty silly to bash a 99c glass file from ebay, but you know what, I’d rather buy 100 of these then 1 of the aforementioned files. You can see small streaks of exposed smooth glass from where it’s worn away after filing my nails xD I guess having them around for emergency use wouldn’t be too bad, especially not for 99c emergencies.

Now, the Cutex one. This I do have photos for. It’s pretty bad, but not on the level of Revlon bad. This took about a month to wear away and become dull. I purchased it from Priceline for again around $12.

When I had noticed it lost its edge I was disappointed, because I actually thought this nail file would’ve been good quality. I was obviously not aware A few weeks ago I gave D the glass file to examine, and he accidentally broke it, but that was for the best, because I discovered this was another spray on texture type. He actually used the other half of the broken file to scrape away the texture, exposing smooth glass underneath :/ The blue on the glass isn’t even coloured glass, it’s some sort of thin plastic coating, found that out from scratching at it as well xD Before the file broke I had tried to clean and scrub it thinking it was just dirty. Nope. Just not a good file. So here are some photos of this file. I’m not sure if Cutex products are available outside Australia, I bet you could find them in New Zealand. I do not recommend purchasing this nail file, as it will not last. You’re better off wasting 99c on the ebay one, because it’s pretty much the same quality. Not worth what I paid for at Priceline.

You can see here how the texture has been scratched off in the top piece. Notice the subtle wear of the file on the side edge of the file, that was from my nails alone. You can also see part of the blue being scratched off from underneath.

I took the photo on top of a coloured business card to try and show how prominent the wear of the file had been. The scratch on the top piece was deliberate, but the bottom piece, that was from repeated use with just my nails. No wonder I felt it becoming dull over time, my nails were scratching off the texture!

I wish that there was a way for people to know what they were paying for when it comes to glass nail files. Seems like the only way is to either try and hope for the best or do research first and then purchase. Research is a much better alternative than potential money wasting, and have purchased this nail file from Mont Bleu. I had someone recommend this company to me, and I have seen some nail bloggers discuss this company as well. I’ve had it for 3 weeks, and it’s a radical difference from the other three files. It has not lost any edge, the texture is apart of the glass, and it also comes with a lifetime gurantee, which to me shows that they’re willing to put their money to the test. This nail file was also around $12 AUD including shipping it to me. So it’s not expensive on my end to have a file that actually works, will not wear away, has a lifetime guarantee attached and is of high quality.

Here’s hoping none of us ever come across a dud glass nail file
