A few months ago in the perfume decant circle I am in, we placed a group order for Haus Of Gloi’s halloween/autumn collection, so I nabbed some samples and ordered myself some full sizes as well. Haus Of Gloi is an interesting perfumery for me. They tend to make a lot of ‘foodie’ and sweeter smelling offerings, however, they can do some darker perfumes as well.

In this order I have samples of

  • Red Roan
  • Pumpkin Queen
  • Saft Ernte
  • Pumpkin Eater
  • Old Cider Haus

I also purchased 2 full size perfumes in

  • Samhain
  • Spider Silk

Red Roan

Fresh strawberry flecked porridge with maple syrup and adulterated with a splash of white cognac.

This is my least favourite of all. Unfortunately for me I find myself smelling a more salty porridge, rather than one sweetened with maple syrup and strawberries. Don’t get me wrong, the Strawberry is there and it’s quite pretty.  I’m not saying all I smell is salt, but I was really expecting it to have more of a soft oat feel to it. I feel that if the porridge didn’t have the salty tang, I’d really like it more.

Pumpkin Queen

Gentle hay pillows, pumpkin, ripe peaches dusted with clove and nutmeg, dried summer herbs, and lastly, a lovely crown of amber.

This is definitely a spicy one! It’s a warm and comforting fragrance and at times, call me crazy, but it almost seems to give the tiniest hint of patchouli, or at least something in combination which makes me think of patchouli anyway! I don’t know what it is but it gives this perfume a bit of dark depth so it doesn’t go the route of ‘foodie’. The first notes I smell are the clove and nutmeg, and it has the pumpkin floating around too. However on cold sniff it’s spice spice spice! It does have a ‘golden’ smell to it, if that makes sense? xD After a few minutes the spices settle down a smidge and the peach comes through. It’s not very pronounced , so don’t expect it to smell predominantly of peach. It’s quite a tangy, sour peach too, which I love :) More like, the peach is a backdrop and the spices become softer and round down, however they are still the main star. At least to my nose they are.

Saft Ernte

A merry drink of harvest and glowing with warmth: Peach juice simmering with sweet spices, pumpkin, silken hazelnut cream and made completely curious with a drop of orange blossom water.

This is probably about the level of sweetness I prefer in a perfume! I didn’t expect to like this one so much, it was quite a surprise! To me this is all about the peaches, and it’s a really pretty tangy peach to boot. There is a wonderful creaminess which balances this quite well and stops it from becoming like I spritzed myself with peach juice. The spices in here are so subtle, so this time the peach is the star and the spices are the support. Whereas Pumpkin Queen was quite warm, Saft Ernte is rather cool and not as ‘golden’ as it’s description makes me think it would be. I like the simplicity of this fragrance, and that I can wear this in warmer weather (which is coming up in Australia, already having to sleep with the fan on!) as well as the cooler months.

Pumpkin Eater

Cream, glowing pumpkin, rich vanilla bean and the tiniest touch of nutmeg butter.

There’s something fruity about this one, and I have no idea why judging by its description. Maybe it’s the combination of pumpkin with the vanilla? This vanilla is excellent, it’s not a cakey vanilla and it’s so incredibly soft, so you won’t smell it and just think vanilla. It blends beautifully with the pumpkin. This is also incredibly creamy, and the cream seems to stay with me on my skin. If I wait even longer I can smell the nutmeg too! It is there, it’s just hiding waiting for it’s moment to pop out. This is a fragrance that lovers of all things sweet would enjoy.

Olde Cider Haus

Old oak, sweet drying hay fields, crushed apple pulp and vanilla bean husks.

When I first tried this, I immediately thought of a perfume I have already which smells very similar, Children Should Not Play With Dead Things from One Hand Washes The Other (way to go to make me type a lot of words Becca!), and no doubt I made the connection – the oak, apple and vanilla! Whereas CSNPWDT is more dark and dirty, Olde Cider Haus is more….friendlier? :P Let’s just say it doesn’t have quite the sinister edge then! It starts off quite bright from the apple, but it doesn’t take long for the oak to emerge and to soften the apple then the vanilla wants to play as well. I like how this one morphs and changes. This is honestly a beautiful fragrance that can be worn year round, and when I can, I’ll be ordering a full size. It’s cool, soft, has a fruity edge, I really feel that this is probably going to be one of their best sellers, or at least a very big crowd pleaser.  Seriously, do like, do love , and it’s strange because you all know my stance on fruity/sweet perfumes, but it has oak, and I am a sucker for woods <3

Samhain

Freshly turned earth, wet leaves, and a cool spectre ridden wind.!

This is a perfume from last year that I missed out on, and kicked myself all year for doing so. I have Foxcroft from Solstice Scents which is a similar story: soil and leaves – however the two of them are not alike at all! So after a year of using Foxcroft, I was expecting Samhain to smell on the level, but I was surprised for sure. I definitely smell the dirt and the wet leaves, but there’s something that smells anise like in here, and it matches this perfume so perfectly. It also seem to lean to the herbal side as well, maybe a little bit of mint?  There is nothing bright or clean about this. This is dark, dirty and enchanting. I know I would wear this year round, but maybe some people might feel that it’s a strictly autumn fragrance. Personally, I cannot wait to wear this in summer, as a reminder of cooler days approaching me ;) One thing I did notice with Samhain is that it’s quite strong, and if I apply too much then I’ll get a headache. So really, I’ll probably only wear a drop on each wrist, and just one on my neck and I’m done.

Spider Silk

Procured from a dream: delicate water mint, wispy grey musk, crystalline webs of amber, oakmoss, torchwood, copaiba resin, and a touch of withered violet leaf.

This is a new offering to the Autumn/Halloween seasonal range for Haus Of Gloi. When I read the description, it was one of those instances where you know there’s no point in sampling, because you’re confident you’re going to like it, and it delivered :) When it arrived, my absolute first thoughts when I put this on was unexpected. To me, this smells like velvet lined wooden jewellery boxes, and brings up beautiful memories :) This is ridiculously ethereal and wispy, not to mention fragile. Everything about this perfume screams to me Victorian age England, and I don’t really know why. Maybe because it’s elegant and understated, and oh so incredibly romantic? Spider Silk becomes less of a perfume just merely to be worn to make you smell beautiful, but more of an incredible mood enhancer and imagination shaper. It’s ridiculous how serene I feel wearing this. The mint is whisper there, and I smell mainly the musk and the soft woods. Do treat yourself and grab a sample before it goes!

Make sure to place your order with Haus Of Gloi before the seasonal offerings go away. I am not sure when that would be, but maybe they might be around until mid November.
