Disclaimer: I received these products free of charge to review. Nobody can purchase my opinion, even if you paid with 1 million Pugs and Tapirs. Each. Needless to say this review is unbiased and contains my opinion, which is honest, and is not expert.
A couple of months ago, Jess Bee, the owner of Moon Rabbit, advertised if people would be interested in receiving some promotional samples to review on their blogs or youtube vlogs, and I put my name into the hat. Luckily I was chosen, and I’ve received my samples of the Groundhog Day set plus an extra sample.
Moon Rabbit Cosmetics is an up and starting indie cosmetics company who has a store over at storenvy, with currently there being offerings of 2 collections for sale : Groundhog Day set and Valentines Day set. You cannot purchase anything individually currently. You can also check out Moon Rabbit Cosmetics’ facebook page as well here.
When Jess contacted me, I asked if she had any vegan products for me to review, so she sent me the Groundhog Day set. The Valentines Day set contains carmine, so obviously not vegan. So yes, Moon Rabbit Cosmetics does indeed offer vegan product, which I am delightfully happy to see of course
Swatches
Swatched over De Leon Cosmetics primer, photographed outdoors in indirect sunlight. *my apologies – it should be labelled as yellow #1 not yellow #7.
My favourite from the set is punsutawney phil – the name alone is tonnes of fun to say
The shimmer in P.Phil is really beautiful, I wish the photo could show it up even more. 6 more weeks of winter reminds me of MAC’s Expensive Pink, which I actually own (it was a present from someone last year so I know it isn’t vegan, but I’m not going to throw away a gift). Expensive Pink is more metallic and has a golden sheen to it, whereas 6 more weeks of winter is more of a pearly shimmer, and more pink toned. It’s not meant to be a dupe, but when I swatched it, it made me think of Expensive Pink
Also just a quick look using all three of the Groundhog Day colours. 6 more weeks of winter in the inner corner, punxsutawney phil in the outer lid and 6 more weeks til spring in the crease. This *very* neutral for me, however I can definitely see myself wearing a combination like this on lazy days or for interviews. I think this set has given me a little kick in the bum to not ignore neutals all the time (I can’t help it, I do love greens and oranges). 6 more weeks of winter is very close to my skin colour, so it seems to provide me with a little bit of highlight and shimmer. I may experiment and try using it as a browbone highlight
Product
I found that upon swatching, they came up darker than the store swatches. This may be due to my primer. I am not sure if the store swatches are over primer or bare skin. The more shimmery colours – yellow #1 and 6 more weeks of winter were the easiest to apply, as is the case for most shimmery shadows I own. However I did notice streaking in 6 more weeks of winter and. I think this could be fixed by finely milling/blending the shadow some more. I did notice that there were some little clumps of unblended product in each of the shadows I have (except for Yellow #1). I am assuming it’s titanium dioxide, as it’s white. I think that if the colours were blended some more, I wouldn’t of had the streaking. The only negative feedback I have with regards to the shadows is that they are not blended enough, however even so, they’re still very useable and deliver excellent colour payoff. These are definitely not sheer.
Packaging
The samples came in clamshell pods, and were shrink wrapped. I think I really am beginning to love clamshell pods!
They were labelled quite simply with pen, but I am sure that when Moon Rabbit grows there will be more definitive labelling. For now, as a brand new company, I don’t have a problem with the labelling
Everything arrived in a non padded envelope (not a letter size envelope, but one that is the same size as the padded ones). I think in the future it might be best to send international orders in a padded envelope, just as a precaution. Although there was nothing wrong with the products when they arrived, just perhaps something to consider for the future when the budget allows. Each clamshell contains 1/4 teaspoon of product, which is super generous.
Pricing
The website lists the following prices:
Groundhog Day set full size – $12
Groundhog Day set sample size – $3 (1/4 tsp samples)
Valentines Day set full size – $16
Valentines Day set sample size – $4 (1/4 tsp samples)
Currently there is nothing for individual sale, just in sets.
If we break it down, each full size jar is $4 and each sample pod is $1. The full size jars are 5 g jars, with no sifters, and contain 1 teaspon of product. Not many indie brands offer full size 5g jars, with no sifter for $4. Definitely good value.
Overall
I really like the direction that Moon Rabbit is heading in, and I wish them all the best to kick start the brand! ![]()
I think that the only issue which needs to be addressed is blending the colours more finely to avoid those little white lumps of titanium dioxide (which from what I’ve heard can be a pain in the butt!). I enjoy the colours I’ve received, and look forward to working them into other looks. The Groundhog Day set is perfect for those who love neutrals and browns. Otherwise, there isn’t anything else to discuss with regards to product quality. Moon Rabbit Cosmetics is definitely a brand I will be checking out as they grow
